Hello from the West Indies’ – Sandeep Lamichhane set to join Nepal’s T20 World Cup squad in West Indies

Kathmandu, June 11, 2024 – Sandeep Lamichhane, Nepal’s star cricketer, has arrived in the Caribbean to participate in the last two league-stage matches of the T20 World Cup. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) confirmed his arrival via social media, marking a crucial addition to the team’s lineup.

Lamichhane faced significant challenges securing a visa for the United States, being denied twice and thus missing the initial stages of the tournament. Despite these setbacks, persistent efforts from CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand and Secretary Paras Khadka ensured his presence for the remaining matches.

Taking to social media, Lamichhane expressed his gratitude towards Chand and Khadka for their unwavering support. He has been named as a replacement for Pratish GC, who will now serve as a travelling reserve.

Nepal’s campaign in the T20 World Cup had a rocky start with a narrow defeat against the Netherlands. The team is scheduled to play against Sri Lanka on June 12 before heading to the Caribbean for their subsequent matches. Lamichhane’s inclusion is seen as a significant boost to the team’s morale and performance.

Lamichhane played a pivotal role in Nepal’s qualification for the T20 World Cup after a decade-long hiatus. He emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Nepal in the T20 World Cup Asia Qualifiers, taking nine wickets. His standout performance came in the semifinal match against the UAE, where he delivered an impressive spell of 4-1-14-2.

The journey to secure his participation was fraught with challenges, including public protests in Kathmandu after his visa denials on May 22 and May 30. However, his successful arrival in the Caribbean marks a hopeful turn for Nepal’s T20 World Cup aspirations.

Fans and supporters are eagerly anticipating Lamichhane’s performance in the upcoming matches, hopeful that his presence will help turn the tide in Nepal’s favor.
